The Thorn Extratour - Fully concentrated ° The boy tries to grasp the thorn in the sole of his foot with his thumb and forefinger. He seems to have just sat down and started trying to pull out the thorn, or we are already in the middle of his renewed attempts. ° He is completely focused on it. ° Whether and when he will succeed remains an open question. ° The original of this bronze sculpture was probably not excavated, but has been “above ground” since it was created. ° Originally owned by the papacy, it was donated to the city of Rome by Pope Sixtus IV in 1471. Under Napoleon in Paris, the sculpture has been back in Rome since 1917. ° The dating is difficult to establish clearly: Greek original 3rd century BC, Roman copy 1st century BC. ° The sculpture shown is a plaster cast that can be seen in the Museum of Casts of Classical Sculptures in Munich. ° This state museum is dedicated to bringing ancient sculptures closer to a wider audience.
